Weybridge Vandals U14s vs Farnham – Waterfall Cup Match Report

Paul Hollingshead9 Mar - 10:20

Weybridge Vandals 27 – Farnham 15

The third fixture of the Waterfall Cup saw Weybridge Vandals take on Farnham on a cold, drizzly March morning. Having already faced two tough encounters earlier in the tournament, the Vandals knew they would need to dig deep once again. From the opening whistle it was clear that Farnham would provide another stern test, particularly in the set piece where their powerful scrum quickly made its presence felt.

Despite the conditions, Vandals started brightly and the first five minutes they demonstrated their composure. A strong charge from Jack punched through the defensive line and gave Vandals early momentum. At the breakdown Vandals secured quick ball, allowing the backs to move it smoothly through the hands. Ollie looped neatly around Charley, creating space out wide, and after a driving ruck close to the line Ben H received the ball to take the ball across the line for the opening try. The conversion was added to give Vandals an early 7–0 lead.
Farnham responded immediately and set the scene for the battle ahead. Sustained pressure through their forwards paid off as they crossed for an unconverted try, narrowing the score to 7–5.

The contest tightened in the middle of the pitch with both sides battling hard at the breakdown. Vandals were handed an opportunity when Farnham were penalised for a high tackle. Vandals opted to kick to touch, setting up an attacking lineout deep in Farnham territory. The move showed real promise as the ball was moved quickly to the wing and Jimmy burst down the touchline before being halted by an offside Farnham defender.

A second lineout followed and the forwards drove hard at the ruck, but the ball became unplayable. Vandals were awarded the scrum, though Farnham managed to turn the ball over and relieve the pressure. Play continued to ebb and flow through the centre of the pitch, both sides contesting every carry and breakdown fiercely.

Eventually Vandals managed to shift the ball wide with quick hands across the backline. When the opportunity came, Ben H took it confidently, racing down the wing to cross the try line and restore Vandals’ advantage. The conversion drifted wide, leaving the score at 12–5.
True to the pattern of the half, Farnham again struck back quickly. Their forwards carried strongly and after building phases close to the Vandals line they forced their way over for another try.

With both teams locked in a physical and evenly matched contest, the referee blew for half time with Vandals narrowly ahead 12–10.
Vandals returned for the second half with heads high, determined to build on their strong first-half performance. Olly's kicking was excellent throughout, helping to keep Farnham pinned back and giving Vandals valuable territory.

The boys stepped up their game from the previous matches, handling the ball smoothly along the line and driving forward with renewed determination. Powerful carries from Max and Ethan repeatedly broke the gain line and created quick ball at the breakdown. When the ball was moved wide to Ben H, his quick feet and sharp running line saw him cut through the defence to score Vandals’ third try. The conversion was added to stretch the lead to 19–10.

Farnham responded with a strong attacking sequence, moving the ball smartly along their back line, but Vandals’ defensive line held firm. Charley in particular was fierce in defence, putting in several decisive tackles to stop Farnham gaining ground.

Vandals continued to apply pressure with relentless forward carries and strong support play at the breakdown. Their persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty, which Ben H calmly slotted through the posts to extend the lead to 22–10.

As the scoreboard began to favour Vandals more comfortably, Farnham appeared to panic slightly and a hurried kick went astray. However, to their credit they quickly regrouped and managed to work their way back into the game with another try.

Despite the late score, Vandals remained in control and saw out the match with confidence to secure a well-earned 27–15 victory.
After the game, Head Coach Paul reflected on the performance:
“Despite Farnham's pack being larger, we held our own in mauls and rucks. We were sharp in the backs and had great rucking speed, getting the ball out quickly. The lessons of the last few weeks and the hard work in training are really paying off.”
