Weybridge Vandals U14s travelled to Chobham on Sunday for a friendly played on a hard, arid pitch under clear skies. With Chobham managing reduced player numbers and limited substitutes, the teams agreed to uncontested scrums, allowing both sides to focus on fast, attacking rugby and a strong defensive structure.
Vandals wasted no time stamping their authority on the match. Straight from the kick-off, Charlie tore through the defensive line to score a superb early try between the posts, confidently converted by Ben H. Moments later, Jimbo capitalised on quick hands through the backs to cross for the second. From then on, Vandals controlled territory and tempo, refusing to let Chobham take advantage of the downhill slope in the first half.
The team adapted swiftly to the newly introduced U14s rule prohibiting interference with the number nine at the base of the ruck - a challenge they took in their stride with disciplined organisation around the breakdown.
Adam impressed with safe, confident hands, taking several tricky kick-offs cleanly and setting up attacking platforms. Across the game, Jimbo, Ben H and Charlie consistently broke the gain line with powerful runs that stretched Chobham’s defence and opened up scoring opportunities. By half-time, Vandals had surged into a commanding 28–0 lead.
In a fine show of rugby spirit, Max and Harry stepped in to play for Chobham during the latter stages of the first half after they suffered an injury, and ensuring the contest stayed balanced and competitive. Vandals’ structure and communication continued to shine as they moved the ball through the hands, working space and maintaining relentless pressure. H stayed on to play all of the second half for Chobham.
Chobham rallied in the second half and came close to crossing the line, but Vandals’ defensive grit turned the tide. A slick turnover saw Ben H break from deep, sprinting half the pitch to score another outstanding try. Spirited teamwork enabled further tries by Logan (clearly now faster than his Dad!) and Max, while the final stages saw Casey spotted a gap from scrum-half, darting through and releasing Ollie B, who crashed over the line to round off a dominant team performance.
Ben H’s consistency off the tee was exceptional, successfully converting seven out of eight tries — a remarkable kicking display that rewarded the team’s attacking precision.
The final whistle confirmed a well-deserved 54–0 victory to Weybridge Vandals — a statement of intent and evidence of the squad’s growing maturity.
Coach Paul summed it up proudly:
“From start to finish, the boys played with structure, power, and purpose. They stuck to the drills, trusted each other, and turned hard work on the training pitch into a complete team performance. The rucking was fierce, the defence relentless, and the teamwork outstanding. They should be very proud.”
