Our long Owls history of tough, hard fought games against Farnham continued on Saturday. Unfortunately the result didn’t go our way but there many positives to the game especially in the second half when we outplayed Farnham and had the majority of possession and territory.
In the first half Farnham( who travelled with a big squad) adapted better to a very heavy pitch to create two good scores. We played with plenty of spirit in the first half but were too loose, at half time we agreed to use our forwards to pick and go or punch up off Johnny Basson at 9. This worked to great effect and despite lots of time in the Farnham 22 we were unable hold onto the final pass on a number of occasions when we were threatening. I was very proud of everyone’s efforts and delighted that the 3s players who played (Paul Dickenson, Mike McDonnagh and Sam) all enjoyed the game and made positive impacts on the pitch.
Thank you to ALL the boys who played; here are my Match highlights
• A fantastic MOM performance from Johnny Basson who stepped in at scrum half in the absence of Clarkey and Gareth and had a blinder ( all on 3 hours a night sleep with the new baby, we knew the drug taking would eventually pay off).
• Another brilliant performance by Barge in centre who was singled out for praise by the Farnham skipper as “The best player on the pitch”
• Good to have Guy Holvey Clark back in an Owls jersey (thanks to Stu the 2s skipper for releasing Guy from his benching duties for the 2s to play for us).
• Browny celebrated his Owls coming of age with some barnstorming runs and the hit of the day wiping our 4 man Farnham overlap at the same time.
• Huge work rate and energy from Amos, Millser and Mike Cumberlidge in the back row.
• Apart from one ball that went direct into the Farnham scrum halves hand our lineout was much improved from the game against Camberley. Good work Tiger
• The fun of playing a close fought, tough game with your mates in a Vandals jersey. Yes ultimately it was in a losing cause but I feel if we stick together we are very very close to a really big win.
This Saturday we head to Dorking. Let’s make sure we take a really competitive team over to Dorking capable of delivering the win we are all looking for.
