London Exiles 10 pts Weybridge Vandals 39pts

Chris Brooks1 Feb 2013 - 09:33

A dominating and destructive performance by their forwards who had the Exiles pack retreating at a rate of knocks at the set piece, paved the way for this comprehensive Vandals victory. Had they held onto the ball more particularly in the first half when

Vandals were first into their stride with a run by winger JONNY HOWE and a break by full back GEORGE BOLSTER but it was Exiles who had the first opportunity for a score but the penalty kick awarded was not converted. A fine kick by JAMES WELLDEN, who had a good day with his field kicking moved Vandals into an attacking position but a knock-on at the line out was a prelude to a period of prolonged possession for the Exiles. A great tackle by Vandals BEN SCOTT probably prevented a try but having wasted a second chance with a forward pass Exiles converted a third opportunity with a try in the corner following good hands in the backs. Vandals responded with two dominant scrums and from the second of these centre CASSIAN BRAMHALL-LAW made a devastating break to put JONNY HOWE over in the corner for BOLSTER to convert. An interception by prop JAMES LOUBSER put him in the clear, but with a good thirty metres to the try line he did not quite have the legs to score a rare try, but support was on hand. Vandals forced a five metre scrum from which No.8 ANDY HOWE plunged over. Exiles had an opportunity from an attacking line out before a lovely break by scrum half DAVE LOUBSER gave the ascendancy back to Vandals, but frustratingly they conceded a couple of penalties and also got turned over twice. It appeared that half time would be signalled with Vandals holding onto a slender lead but an aggressive counter ruck enabled fly half WELLDEN to demonstrate great vision with a well judged kick to the corner. BEN SCOTT maturing with every game followed up and beating the full back to the ball gathered to race round under the posts for an opportunist try which BOLSTER converted to give Vandals a decisive score with this last play of the half.

An early run by HARRY REED who had replaced BRAMHAM-LAW who had tweaked a hamstring in making the break for Vandals first try, penned Exiles in their own half. They were increasingly under pressure in the scrums and conceding a penalty enabled Vandals to increase their lead to 22pts. Growing in confidence Vandals support work and off loading seamed certain to bring another try but it was Exiles who never shied away from attacking from deep who scored and exceptional counter attack try. Any thought they may have had of continuing the fight back were quickly laid to rest as Vandals stormed back onto the attack and after another fine kick by WELLDEN, ANDY HOWE drove over from the ensuring five metre scrum for his second try. A blistering run by SCOTT took play into the attacking 22 and from phase play back DARYL BRYANT crashed over for the try. Now playing like a man possessed the same player strode powerfully forward. Although his pass to a supporting colleague was forward, this was only temporary respite for Exiles and they could do nothing to prevent BRYANT crashing over for his second score for another BOLSTER conversion to give Vandals an emphatic win.
