London SW 3,
Having lost to Basingstoke earlier in the season Vandal had a score to settle and they did so in the most emphatic fashion scoring 24 points in each half in perhaps their best performance of the campaign.
The visitor’s efforts were few and far between as Vandals were constantly on the attack with the forwards providing a plethora of possession for the backs who had a field day penetrating the defence at will and touching down for7 of the 8 tries.
There was no indication of the rout to follow as Basingstoke stole one of Vandals line outs in the opening minutes and then an interception gave them further possession, but they could make little use of it. Vandals quickly showed their desire to run the ball, with winger Greg Lynch who had a storming game, sprinting down the flank, and it was he opened his side's account after the pack had won a strike against the head. Scrum half Dan Weldon who, with Joe Spencer, formed a dominant half back partnership, converted. Basingstoke briefly threatened, kicking a penalty down close to the five metre line, but they then lost the ensuring line out and Vandals were soon back on the attack with full back George Bolster and Lynch running from deep past a bewildered defence and it was Lynch who went over for his 2nd try. Weldon converted to give Vandals of 14-point lead. Basingstoke briefly got their hands on the ball, but again there was little penetration. Vandals skipper Harry Reed showed the way with a fine break which should have resulted in a further try, but for some indifferent handling. Nevertheless, the try was not long in coming as fly half Spencer sliced through the defence to touchdown. The same player then quickly notched up his 2nd try after Bolster had made another break and with half time beckoning Vandals had a healthy lead of 24 points.
There was no way that Vandals were going to take their foot off the accelerator in the second half and they quickly added to the score line with an electric run by winger Steve Harrison who touched down in the corner. A superb conversion by Wellden took Vandals to 31 points and a shellshocked Basingstoke were now staring at a heavy defeat. They did prevent another score for the next few minutes, but it was Vandals relentless pressure eventually producing their 6th try, with lock Anthony Tyrrell driving over. Harrison then demonstrated his elusiveness again by linking up with Lynch, and it was the latter who rounded off his outstanding performance with his 3rd try.
Vandals had more chances to add to their total before they did score again for their 8th try captain Reed going over for his 2nd following possession from a 5-metre scrum. Wellden added the extras to give Vandals are highly invigorating victory.
