Match Report - LSW3 - Vandals v US Portsmouth

Stuart Howkins10 Oct 2019 - 20:03

A powerful performance by Vandals see a comfortable bonus point win

Weybridge vandals 51 pts United Services Portsmouth 12 pts

A powerful performance by Vandals pack produced a plethora of possession for their backs who profited by scoring 8 tries, 4 of them by Captain Harry Reed. It was a clinical performance and one which will boost confidence for future League fixtures where the opposition is likely to be somewhat tougher.

The military men actually started with all guns blazing and threatening to strike first but these early attacks and faded and soon as Vandals fly half Harry Weatherall converted a penalty after US had been penalised at the scrum. Another dominant set piece saw Lock Anthony Tyrell then drive over for Vandals opening try which Weatherall converted. A riposte from USP gave them a penalty but the lineout they opted for was stolen by flanker Darren Lockyer which led to full back George Bolster darting through the defence into the attacking 22. USP managed to quell the danger and launched a counterattack but were unable to maintain any continuity and vandals made them pay, as centre Lloyd Pullen broke to set up a try for Reed which Weatherall again converted to give his side a lead of 17 points. Prop Craig Decoteau to make his presence felt with a thrust down the middle and after phase play and fast hands in the backline, Reed tore through USP defence for his 2nd try to take his side into a 22 point lead at half time.

Any chances that USP might feel they had of a comeback with thwarted immediately on the resumption as straight from the kick-off vandals won possession with bolster and read combining to give the latter his hat trick. Another Weatherall conversion took the score to 29 and with coach Damien Porter urging the team to maintain the pressure Vandals did just that with number 8 Joshua Carter picking up from the base of the scrum to pin USP in their 22. From a second scrum the ball was moved wide for winger Greg Lynch to Sprint over in the corner for vandals 5th try. This time Weatherall could not convert and USP showed great fighting spirit to move upfield and drive over from an attacking line out. Perhaps feeling their job had been done and had gone off the boil, Vandals came back in a determined fashion scoring 2 further tries in quick succession.

First Bolster outpaced the defence following line out ball, and then scrum half Dan Wellden taking a leaf out of England's Ben Youngs style darted over from a scrum. The latter try was converted by Weatherall taking Vandals score to 46. With a half century now beckoning and high on confidence they began attacking from deep against the tiring defence and eventually after gathering loose ball in midfield, Reed was able to stroll over for his 4th try.

To their credit USP fought back and following a great break by their number 8 and close support play they scored a second try. This was a blot on Vandals defensive work which for the most part had been solid and they were determined to re-establish their authority on the game and finished with another try. They drove deep into USP territory and Reed appear to have notched up his 5th score only to be denied by a forward pass.

After their narrow loss last week to Warlingham this was the most positive of responses some find creative and attacking rugby produced some excellent tries and a victory with maximum points.
