While others have lamented the long injury list at Weybridge Vandals this season, for centre Sam Bullett it is water off a duck’s back.
The 24-year-old put in a typically robust display in a losing cause at Havant on Saturday as head coach George Pickersgill’s men crashed to a third Regional Two South Centre defeat of the season.
His combative style, alongside centre partner Tom Bolger, helped keep Vandals in the contest for much of the game, although the team visibly tired in the final quarter as they lost 35-8 at storm-ravaged Hooks Lane.

Thoughtful: Sam Bullett, centre, was Vandals' man of the match at Havant on Saturday
Many observers have noted the quality of the Vandals line-up that could be named from those currently side-lined, which includes hooker Cameron Edgar, back row Tom Frewin, skipper James Gulliver, second row James Weatherall, fly half Dan Wellden and centre Karl Hoade.
The fact Bullett – alongside full back Dan Krikorian, prop Joel Keefe and winger Fin Brander – is one of only four players to have featured in every league matchday squad this term, further illustrates the odds Vandals continue to battle.
Free-scoring league-leaders Wimborne visit Brownacres on Halloween on the back of an 83-0 triumph over Camberley meaning they are now notching an average of 48 points per game.
But the thought of that horror show, coupled with the frightening shortage of resources, is not something keeping Bullet awake at night.
“Obviously we’ve got a lot of injuries, but having played a few cameos in the back row I’m not really surprised there are few sore shoulders,” said the durable back.
“It does show the depth we’ve managed to build over the last couple of years. A lot of clubs, if they were in a similar position, would be really struggling.
“We are desperate to get boys back, but equally we are happy with what we have."
He added: “We’ve always got a winning mindset and that is never going to change.
"We know Wimborne will be a tough side, but so were Tiffs and so were Winchester and we beat them.
“We’re not really focused on what they are doing and what they are about. We just focus on ourselves and what we can do to get better.
“Hopefully, off the back of that, we can give them a tough game and come away with a W.”
Dorset-based Wimborne, who visit Weybridge for the first time this week, are bringing a large contingent of travelling support for Vandals’ Past Presidents and Vice Presidents Lunch on Saturday, which should make for a great day on Desborough Island – whatever happens.
