Any thoughts Basingstoke may have had on inflicting Vandals second league defeat of the season soon evaporated as they were very quickly eclipsed in the set pieces and this supremacy was reflected the score line.
Despite some heroic defence by the Hampshire side which saw them putting in tackle after tackle Vandals just had too much attacking power and in the 50 pts they scored demonstrated their desire and determination to get over the tryline whenever in possession.
From the first whistle Vandals drove forward with an early maul, and when they stole a line out the kick ahead was followed up by the prowling Steve Harrison and he dived over for the try. An early leg injury to full back George Bolster, subsequently diagnosed as a break, saw him replaced by
the pugnacious Greg Lynch and it was he who scored Vandals second try after a superb break by fly half Harry Weatherall, and it was Weatherall who converted to give Vandals a 12 pt lead. Poor ball from a line out led to Basingstoke losing possession and Vandals moved the ball wide and set up a series of attacks from which prop Josh Thomas drove over to increase his side score to 17 pts. Basingstoke threatened just on half time but a great tackle by centre Lloyd Pullen saw Vandals reach the interval 17 pts ahead.
They made some early changes at the start of the second half with Joshua Carter and Craig De’Coteau coming on for Will Gibson-Hunt and Josh Thomas, and the team continued to gain ground particularly from the second phase, and it was no surprise when they went further ahead through a try from flanker Karl Hoade. With Hooker Callum Hennessey showing some deft footwork skills and then scoring to move Vandals to 29 pts, and then number 8 Darren Lockyer going over for his side's fifth try, Vandals increased their lead to 36 pts. With more and more ball coming their way it was no surprise that they reached the half century with further tries by Carter and Captain Harry Reed, the latter after a fine run by winger Ollie Day. A fine victory which will fill fans with confidence as they prepare to challenge Petersfield their closest rivals for the top of the league.
Not to be outdone by the exploits of the 1st XV, Vandals second team had the better of the exchanges against old rivals Lightwater, winning comfortably by 17 pts to nil, while on the Friday evening Vandals Vet's, captain by old favourite Bill Painter, shared 54 pts with Old Paulines, coming out victorious by 35 pts to 19. Both sides played some exhilarating rugby with tries by man of the match Joe Costa, added by Brian O'Leary, Luke Batten, Bill Painter and by Mike Cox who was celebrating 20 years playing for Vandals, and latterly by the mercurial president Kevin Keaney, who relished his role as a finisher ensuring a Vandals victory.
On Sunday Lewis Kennedy starred for Vandals U14 team who nevertheless were second best to Reeds Weybridge despite showing spirit and plenty of good defensive work. Over on the notorious Reeds 1XV pitch, Vandals Colts held their own on the slope to record victory by 10 pts to 7 after a furious attempt to get a second try by the home side. There was much Ill discipline by both sides and penalties conceded at frequent intervals, but Vandals supported by a large crowd, were deserved winners and had their handling then been more composed they surely would have scored more than two tries. Vandals secured the early possession and had the edge in the set pieces, and once a quality ball in the loose. They opened the scoring after Henry Gulliver and Ben Whitham broke through to set up Jay Stewart for the score. Reeds had a golden opportunity to get on level terms but squandered the chance with a knock on in a scoring position. The tactical kicking or rather the lack of it invited to counterattack, but too often these broke down due to more handling errors, and it was left to Paul Lewis Howard to drive forward and take the game to his opponents. His efforts perhaps deserved more but his aggressive running getting over the gain line added to his allowed his side to get the victory. The final quarter saw Reeds scamper over for a converted try and a frantic effort to get a second, but Vandals defence held firm
