Vandals must win battle up front to counter Old Tiffs threat

Front five in for a stiff examination on the road this week

Weybridge Vandals front row will be anticipating a stiff workout when they pack down at Old Tiffinians on Saturday.

Head coach George Pickersgill's side got their season up and running with a 34-7 win over Guildford last week at the same time this week's hosts were putting Camberley to the sword to the tune of a 41-12 triumph.

Old Tiffs finished fourth in Regional Two South Central last season and are likely to be among the big hitters this time around.

Only champions Bournemouth (888) scored more points last season than Tiffs' 876, but their 70-50 defeat to Chobham in March perhaps demonstrated why they weren't closer to the top.

"Old Tiffs are going to present a significant challenge. To put 40-odd points on Camberley is an achievement in itself, especially away from home," said Pickersgill.

"From what I understand they've got a strong presence in the front row and that's something we'll be aware of and preparing for.

"Every single game in this league is going to be tough and we won't underestimate anyone. I believe we've got the squad to deal with those challenges.

"We'll prepare properly and make sure we're ready for another tough game."

Second XV captain Ben Josse makes his first team debut at scrum half, while back row Tom Frewin sits this one out with what could be a significant arm injury picked up against Guildford.

Starting XV: Thomas, Cummins, Hempstead, Brooks, Crabb, Taylor, Thornley, Edgar; Josse, Wellden, Reed, Bullett, Hoade, Brander, Krikorian. Bench: Weatherall H, Keefe, Weatherall J.
