Vandals' injured stars will not be rushed back

There is no quick fix to injury crisis with proper rehabilitation the priority for Weybridge Vandals coach

Weybridge Vandals might be in the grip of a chronic injury crisis, but head coach George Picksersgill is not the sort to press his players back into action ahead of time.

The Brownacres outfit were missing 10 regulars in the forwards - as well as in-form centre Karl Hoade - as they crashed 64-11 to Tottonians on Saturday.

Hooker Cameron Edgar, who scored six tries in last week's win over Winchester, was the latest to be added to Pickersgill's list of injury concerns as he limped off in the first half and was later seen on crutches.

Missing: Centre Karl Hoade, left, was a late withdrawal from Saturday's defeat to Tottonians

While Vandals will be looking to draw a line under Saturday's result quickly in the short term, the coach says that will not come at the expense of his players' long term interests.

"I think this has probably been one of the most challenging periods in terms of injuries that we've experienced in my near two years at the club," said Pickersgill earlier this month

"We're very fortunate to have an excellent physio who has been fantastic in guiding both myself and the other coaches through the injury management process.

"The priority is making sure players are rehabilitating properly and, when they do return, they're ready for the long term rather than rushing them back and risking further setbacks.

"It is frustrating at the moment, but we're confident we'll start to see some of those players returning over the next couple of weeks."

Vandals travel to Havant on Saturday to take on the National League Two East club’s second-string knowing the hosts are without a first team encounter - which could add to the challenge.
