A three-try final quarter blitz gave Weybridge Vandals a 38-21 pre-season friendly triumph over neighbours Cobham under Friday night lights at Fairmile Lane.

Cameron Edgar’s second try, sandwiched between scores from Jake Cummins and Rory Taylor in the final 20, saw Vandals come from 21-19 down to triumph in their only official warm-up fixture ahead of the new season.

The delayed start to the campaign due to hard ground, means Vandals will not face another club until the season opener at home to Guildford on September 26.

Pickersgill was pleased with what he saw and was in bullish mood ahead of the new season when the league new boys reacquaint themselves with the likes of old foes Camberley, Chobham, Tottonians and Bognor.

"Overall I was very happy with the performance," he said.

"We had some difficulties in the scrum and early season jitters, but what I loved is we fixed those quite quickly and put in a really good team performance for this time of the season.

"We still have a few small bits to tighten up in terms of set piece, but I was really pleased we saw moments that we've been working on in defence.

"We know this is a step above now in terms of the league we've been promoted into, but the boys are absolutely desperate and hungry not to be passengers in this league."

Friday’s win was well deserved and went some way to avenging Vandals’ defeat to their rivals in last season’s Counties One Surrey/Sussex title-decider at Brownacres in April.

The visitors raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to Edgar’s first and one from centre Karl Hoade - who also impressed in kicking three conversions.

Vandals supporters, who travelled in numbers, might have feared the worst as the hosts fought back to lead 14-12, but the late flurry of scores - Edgar’s blistering second the highlight - sent them home happy.

And while Pickersgill hailed man of the match Michael Mason, he pointed out there remained plenty of competition for spots in his starting line-up for opening day.

“There were some really impressive individual performances and we've said right from the beginning that there are still places up for grabs,” he added.

"Mike was fantastic in defence and was my man of the match. Cam Edgar once again showed he is one of the best finishers in this league and, I believe, the league above.

"We had two youngsters who played out of their skin - Fin Brander and Dan Krikorian - and they are showing the promise and talent coming through the club."
