Vandals recorded another vital victory in their quest for promotion this season against the past students of King's College school in Wimbledon. The latter played a full part in a fast open game but Vandals had too much firepower both in the set pieces and open play where they reveled in breaching the advantage line and moving the ball wide to create scoring opportunities.
KCS too showed their attacking ability with the tries they scored, but more often than not they were met with a strong defensive wall which paved the way for Vandals eventual victory.
Early possession went Vandal’s way and their line out driving play proceeded good ball for Dan Wellden to release winger Ollie Day and the latter’s speed and footwork brought in the first try. Forward Luke Dones and then showed his elusive skills with a fine break for Vandals second try, and when hooker Callum Hennessy broke into midfield and was well supported by Ollie day again and his try took Vandals score to 21 points.
KCS fought back with their left wing forcing his way over in the corner, but the remainder of the first half saw Vandals piling on the pressure with substitute Finn Dyke coming on to make his debut and this change only served to galvanize Vandals efforts and kicking a penalty to the five metre line they perfected a fine line out drive to increase their lead to 26 pts to 5.
The Second-half’s opening few minutes belonged to KCS but a thumping tackle by Ollie Day inspired the team and Vandals roared up field to take their score to 31 points despite earlier losing a player to the sinbin.
With the one man advantage KCS confidence grew and they scored two tries, one being a penalty try, to make their total 19 pts. Great individual play by Joe Graves relieved the pressure for Vandals and they played out the last few minutes in comparative comfort even having the luxury of missing a kickable penalty.
On Sunday Vandals under 15 squad played a combined London Welsh and Teddington team and in a dominant display they ran out comfortable winners by six tries to two. They are confident they can secure a further triumph in the next round of the Surrey cup.
Also on Sunday Vandals Colts recorded a last minute victory over old foes Rosslyn park converting a penalty by Daniel Krikorian to give them a win by 36 pts to 35. They did themselves proud and the well deserved praise was heaped upon them by coach Alan Krikorian
