Vandals kick-off new season in style in front of bumper Memorial Lunch crowd

Hooker Callum Hennessy's close-range double set Vandals on their way to a comprehensive 34-7 triumph over Guildford on the opening day of the Regional Two South Central season.

But on a day that saw head coach George Pickersgill's side score five tries in front of a large crowd at Brownacres, the league new boys certainly did not have everything their own way.

Hennessy opened the scoring early in the first half, but if supporters were expecting a procession against last season's league strugglers - who named 11 debutants in their squad - they were to be disappointed as it proved to be the only score in a tight opening period.

The hooker's second put his side 17-0 to the good early in the second half before Guildford hit back with an interception score, but the visitors' resistance melted late on as Vandals ran in three more tries inside the final ten minutes to secure the win.

First, centre Sam Bullett ran over in the corner after good hands had found him in space out wide, before scrum half Sam Hall took advantage of a favourable bounce to collect 19-year-old full back Dan Krikorian's chip to finish with a flourish.

Krikorian, a graduate of the club's junior section, was able to cap an impressive league debut with a try of his own to complete the scoring and help mark skipper-for-the-day Dan Wellden's 100th league appearance for Vandals in style.
