As Vandals we certainly experienced the highs and lows of sport during March, our 1st XV having recorded outstanding bonus point wins at home against promotion rivals Old Ruts and Hove RFC at the beginning of the month meant that we went into our penultimate league game against table topping Twickenham RFC knowing that a win would put us in pole position for promotion.
Unfortunately despite a heroic effort by the players and a massive Vandals travelling support ( Thank you ? ) we came up just short with the game still in the balance with 2 minutes to go, finally losing 29-22 to a very strong Twickenham side.
Our 1st XV finish their league campaign at home to KCS OBs, Saturday 5th April at 3pm and I know the players will want to finish on a high before turning our attention to the cup.
Our Super 2s have also had a fantastic season and currently sit second in a very competitive league. Unlike some local clubs who now appear to be solely focusing on 1st XV rugby, our rugby section goals at Vandals has been to ensure we can always field a competitive 2nd XV and also fulfill all of our Vets fixtures. I am proud we have delivered this.
As our league campaign comes to a close so our attention turns to the Papa John Cup and to the 2nd XV cup. I’m pleased to say that we have been given a Home draw in the first round of the cup when we welcome our friends from London Cornish RFC to Brownacres on Saturday 12th April in a 3pm kick off. On the same day our Super 2s are at home to Teddington 2s in the semi final of the Surrey Alliance cup so it promises to be another very memorable day at the club.
I have often said that a community sport club like ours is only as good as it’s volunteers and as a small gesture of thanks to our army of Rugby section volunteers we will be offering a FREE 'Greedy Boys ' Burger meal to anyone who comes to the club on Saturday 12th April.
If you are a club volunteer and you would like to enjoy a free burger meal that day then please come and see me or one of your section chairs who will give you a voucher to use.
Our Owls continue to have a great season and last Friday they played some fantastic rugby to beat a very strong Barnes side 48 -19. They now head into their Surrey Cup Semi final against old rivals Farnham RFC in great form and I know they will be giving everything to try and retain the Vets Surrey Cup.
