Indiscipline and issues at the set-price cost Weybridge Vandals dear as head coach George Pickersgill’s men were left to wonder what might have been at Old Tiffinians on Saturday.
Two Cameron Edgar tries and a rare walk-in for prop Luke Hempstead were the highlights as the visitors went down 38-23 in East Molesey for their first Regional Two South Central defeat of the season.
While there were plenty of positives to take from the game - not least a hugely combative performance from Vandals forwards with blindside Rory Taylor and Edgar leading the charge - four yellow cards and a malfunctioning line out, in particular, ultimately proved the difference.
If last week’s win over Guildford had been an introduction to Step Six rugby this was the reality check as a formidable Old Tiffs pack flew out of the blocks and demonstrated exactly why they will be in the mix for promotion this term.
The hosts set the tone by powering over for two early tries via a rolling maul and an electric burst from their robust blindside flanker in the opening quarter.
To their credit, a much changed Vandals starting line-up responded with six points through the boot of centre Karl Hoade and Edgar’s first from the back of a scrum made the scores 14-11 before Tiffs' full back went over in the corner following a yellow card for Hempstead close to half time.
While Pickersgill’s men went in just 21-11 adrift at the break, the Tiffs heavy forwards made the most of the extra man after the restart and again scored twice early in the second half to lead 31-11, before a magical off load from Taylor gave the returning Hempstead a walk-in.
A flurry of cards ultimately led to a chaotic final quarter, with debutant Ben Josse, Taylor and Hoade all heading to the sin bin leaving Vandals playing with 13 at one stage.
The indiscipline stifled all attempts to get back in the game and ultimately allowed Tiffs’ dominant loose head to break free from the shackles to set up their final score and make the game safe at 38-18.
Edgar’s late touch down from the back of a rolling maul at a lineout added a deserved gloss to the scoresheet and meant Vandals will certainly relish welcoming Tiffs to Brownacres later in the season.
