Rugby section update - Feb 2026

Stuart Howkins14 Feb - 08:59

2026 starts with a bang

Our 1st XV remain in 2nd place in the league 4 points behind local rivals Cobham with 8 league games remaining. We play Cobham in the league at Brownacres on Saturday 18th April in our last game of the season and everyone one of our players and coaches are committed to going into that game with our destiny in our own hands.

Our squad has been boosted since my last update by the welcome return of Cal Hennessy back from his Aussie sabbatical and Josh Thomas from London Scottish. We also welcome back the experience of Mike Mason and James Wellden who are both back from serious long term injuries. The playing squad are working hard in training despite the challenging weather conditions and competition for places in the 1st XV is very strong. This can be seen in the big wins our Super 2s have had against London Irish and Battersea Ironsides in recent weeks and many of those players are putting their hands up for selection which is great.

The Owls have very much returned to winning ways and are looking for a very strong second half of the season following a big win at home to Cobham vets last Friday.

I was very sad to hear this week that Alan McKay one of our first ever Owls Captains from the early 80s has passed away. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Alan’s family at this sad time. We will have the opportunity to toast Alan at our Owls and past players lunch on Saturday 7th March.

In the junior section our Waterfall cup and Surrey cup games are very much underway. Last weekend our under 12s had their first cup win the week after receiving their club ties.

There were also notable wins for our under 16s and our under 15s and a big win for our under 12 Valkyrie’s cluster. This coming weekend we have 7 cup games scheduled. This does give us major logistical and pitch challenges. Your hard working section chairs are doing their very best to make this work for everyone and I would ask everyone for their support and understanding especially if the weather goes against us.

I was also very sad to hear about the passing of passing of Rob Campbell, former Owls player and parent of u14s player George Campbell over Christmas. Our thoughts out with Robs family at this sad and difficult time.
