Weybridge Vandals Netball Club officially open their new £250,000 courts this weekend on a 'transformational' day on Desborough Island.

Mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Judy Sarsby and local MP Ben Spencer will be guests of honour at Sunday's ribbon-cutting ceremony and mixed netball tournament, which will formally mark the culmination of three-years work to bring the project to life.

The three MUGA courts, which also feature markings for eight pickle courts , will save the netball section around £10,000 a year in court rental costs - funds which will be diverted into coaching, equipment, youth development, and wider club initiatives to support sustainable long-term growth.

The club's junior training will be brought together in one location for the first time improving the overall experience for players, coaches, and families, while strengthening the sense of community within the club.

While primarily for netball use, the knock-on affects for the rest of the Vandals community are significant, as club president Kevin Keaney explained when launching the project's crowdfunding campaign in March.

"It will mean our junior rugby section - who struggle to train in December, January, February when our pitches are unplayable - will be able to use the floodlit courts to train," he said.

"For our junior cricket section, they will be able to play softball cricket when the pitches are wet, and we hope to introduce wheelchair rugby to the Vandals and make our club more inclusive and accessible to all.

"This really is an all-encompassing club project."

While the permanent floodlights are yet to be fully operational, the netball club's four senior teams got first use of the new facilities last week and secured three wins for the As, Bs and Ds.

To witness the dawn of a new era for the club you are invited to join in with the fun on Sunday from 2:30pm at Brownacres, with the ribbon set to be cut at around 2:45pm.

The rugby section's famous Braai Boys will be in charge of the BBQ, with post-training food available from 2pm.
