Joy of six for Edgar as Vandals romp past Winchester in style

Six-y rugby at Brownacres as Weybridge Vandals stun Winchester with a first half blitz to secure a statement triumph

Hooker Cameron Edgar's six-try haul inspired Weybridge Vandals to a 54-31 triumph over Winchester on Saturday to send shockwaves through the Regional Two South Central table.

The 24-year-old, playing in the front row rather than his customary number eight role, delivered a virtuoso display to help move head coach George Pickersgill's men up to third in the fledgling league standings.

Winger Harry Weatherall marked his 100th league appearance with a try and there was also a score for tireless back row Sam Hall as the free-flowing rugby on show left a sizeable crowd thoroughly entertained and relishing the visit of second-placed Tottonians next week.

I'm six-y and I know it: Cameron Edgar celebrates his sixth try which capped a thrilling 54-31 win over Winchester on Saturday

In stark contrast to last week's slow start in defeat at Old Tiffinians, Vandals flew out of the blocks with a try in the first minute. Edgar finished with a flourish to cap a fine flowing move that started directly from kick-off and featured a deft flicked pass from centre Karl Hoade.

Moving the ball quickly was the theme of the day as the lead was extended nine minutes later with slick hands from full back Dan Krikorian and Hoade setting Edgar free down the wing.

The former London Scottish man completed a stunning 15 minute hat-trick with a score under the posts - following a turnover from Hall and barrelling run from prop Luke Hempstead - to leave the visitors shell-shocked.

Second row James Weatherall's departure with a dislocated shoulder did not slow Vandals' progress as his brother Harry forced his way over in the corner to make it 26-0 inside 20 minutes.

To their credit Winchester responded with a try either side of Edgar's fourth and a yellow card for home centre Tom Bolger, as Vandals went in 33-12 up at the break.

The tries and yellow cards kept coming at regular intervals after the restart with combative Harry Brooks seeing yellow for a high tackle which allowed Winch to cross from a driven lineout - although home nerves were settled immediately when Hall claimed an opportunistic score at the restart in response.

Back row Brandon Thornley soon joined Brooks on the naughty step for a deliberate knock on, but Edgar's fifth and sixth tries snuffed out any hope of a Winchester comeback as the two teams traded scores in the closing stages.

Discipline remains a concern for head coach Pickersgill, but with Edgar, Hall and Co in this sort of form Vandals have proved they will be a handful for most opposition - no matter how many players they have on the pitch.

Next weekend's visitors Tottonians, 48-24 winners at Havant IIs, have been warned.

Right here waiting: Edgar collects an offload from number eight Rory Taylor before diving over for the final score in Saturday's 13-try thriller
