End of Season - Cup Win and Cup Heartbreak

1st XV go close but miss out, Owls win the Surrey Vets Cup

Our 1st XV season on the pitch finished with a heartbreaking 35-28 semi final loss in the new national cup competition away to Twickenham on 29th April. For the clubs that embraced it this new cup competition has been a welcome addition to our season and I’m sure it will grow in status season on season. Our two home games against Ruislip RFC and Beccahamians RFC gave us a chance to play teams from around the country and the backs against the wall win against Beccahamians will live long in the memory. A big thank you to all the Vandals supporters who made the trip over to Twickenham to cheers the boys on, I know it meant a lot to them.

Amongst those Vandals supporters at Twickenham RFC were the entire Owls squad who put their Surrey Cup wining celebrations on ice to travel over to Twickenham to supports the 1s. They did so on a high having beaten a strong Farnham vets team 50-19 to win the Surrey Vets Cup for the first time. This result was the culmination of a record season for our Owls with victories over Guildford,Battersea,Esher and Richmond Heavies on the way to the final.

Whilst the boys were gutted not to make the final it did at least mean we didn’t have to cancel our end of season tour which clashed with the final. Since our first club tour to South Wales in the Easter of 1936 The Vandals has had a very proud touring tradition but sadly in recent years senior club tours have fallen off our schedule. One of our rugby section goals this year was to reintroduce the joys of touring to a new generation of Vandals. So it was on Friday 5th May that 38 Vandals relaunched our proud touring tradition as they embarked on our Coronation themed tour to Leeds.
