This result was our 18th league win of the season and our 20th overall and means we head into our league decider against local rivals Cobham RFC this Saturday with the championship still in our hands.
To be crowned champions this Saturday we need to beat Cobham with a bonus point and stop Cobham earning a bonus point.
This will be a huge challenge as Cobham are a very strong and well coached side who are having their own historic season. We have already had two games against them this season and the honors are currently shared with Cobham deservedly winning the home league game just before Christmas and Vandals winning the national cup last 16 game at the end of January.
Saturday will also be our Director of Rugby Damian “Damo” Porter last league game in charge and the culmination of a six year journey. As a club we currently occupy our highest every position in the rugby pyramid since league rugby was introduced in the 1980s and earning promotion this season should we do it will be a massive achievement for all the players, coaches and support team who have all worked so hard to make it happen led by Damian.
Over 40 players have represented the 1s this season so the 20 wins so far have been a collective squad effort and is testament to the strength in depth we have developed as a club and the environment/ culture we have created.
With everything that is at stake and against another local club, Saturdays game is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most significant games in our 94 year history.
We have just over 200 guests attending my annual Presidents lunch which was sold out weeks ago. Cobham have two tables at the lunch and I know that they will be bringing a large traveling support to the game.
My appeal to Vandals everywhere is to try and make it down to the club this Saturday for 3pm KO to cheer the boys on.
Whilst we absolutely want to welcome everyone from Cobham in the true spirit of Rugby I absolutely don’t want to see a Cobham takeover of our club and I want to hear a loud and proud Vandals support throughout the game. As it’s such a big game there will be an officiating team of referees and touch judges for the game so please also show them the respect that they deserve.
It would be great to see as many of our minis, juniors and Valkyries on the sideline cheering on our players and hopefully being inspired by them.
The Big Match at Brownacres.- What supporters need to know!
- Bars-Both the clubhouse bar and the outside bar will be open from midday.
- Car parking - We expect the club to be very busy. We will be using the Owls pitch as an overflow car park. Can I ask everyone to park considerately and if you are parking on the pitch do not leave your car there overnight.
- The club shop will be open between 2pm-3pm for any supporter wanting to buy their Vandals hats and scarves.
- The game kicks off at 3pm.
- Our West End singers will be performing a set in the marquee from 6pm.
