Weybridge Vandals skipper Guy Lovatt insists
staying in London Division Three South West is the first priority after his
side claimed its first league title in the club’s history.
Vandals beat Old Wellingtonians 21-10 on the final
weekend of the season to win London Division Four South West on points
difference ahead of rivals Trojans.
Head coach Ian Bardgett’s men were relegated to the
eighth tier of English rugby in 2006, but have stablised to bounce back at the
third attempt having won 21 of their 22 league encounters this season.
And Lovatt, who will stand down as captain in the
summer, is confident the progress made in the last three seasons will stand them
in good stead next year.
“The side has matured a huge amount since I came
here. The average age of the team was 22-years-old then and it has all come
together,” he said.
“The time is right for someone new to take over. We
need a new voice in the dressing room when it comes to going into a different
league.
“I’m sure my successor will relish the challenge.
If we can strengthen a few areas in the team then I think we can be
competitive, we’ve already shown what we are capable of this year.
“The main aim is to stay in the league. If we can
finish in the top three then that is fantastic, but the most important thing is
to avoid relegation first and then see what happens.”
Tries from winger Ollie Sines and fly-half Darren
Livett - plus 11 points from the boot of leading try-scorer Cassian Bramham-Law
- set Vandals on their way as they finished off a memorable campaign in style.
And Lovatt praised the efforts of a side that has
scored 131 points and conceded just 15 since losing its unbeaten record to Trojans
in March.
“The front row have been a rock all season. We’ve
got better and better throughout the year,” added Lovatt.
“There hasn’t really been one stand out performer.
Everyone has played well at different times and we have come together as a team.
“For it to go down to the final game and to then
close it out was is a great achievement. I’m not only pleased for the team, but
it is a great achievement for the club.”
